Today, almost every smartphone with a camera and a gyroscope can display AR content. Things get even more interesting when the phone is able to locate itself in a room and scan its surroundings in 3D. This technique is called mixed reality. Google Tango is one technology that makes MR experiences possible.
In the future, AR and MR content will be increasingly consumed through headsets. In this area, Microsoft is in the lead with its HoloLens, though the device is currently only available to developers. Magic Leap, a secretive startup that has received over a billion dollars in funding, will soon release its own MR headset. And Apple has made a huge bet on AR, turning the iPhone into an AR platform.
